For Light of Day, Musicians Will Play

Friday, October 31, 2003

Jobonanno and the Godsons of Soul performed at the first three Light of Day benefit concerts -- in 2000 at the Stone Pony, and in 2001 and 2002 at the Tradewinds in Sea Bright. With the Tradewinds now closed, the Parkinson's Disease Foundation fund-raiser returns to the Pony this weekend. Both the Saturday and Sunday shows are sold out.

Joining the Godsons on Saturday are Joe Grushecky, Garland Jeffreys, Soozie Tyrell, Willie Nile, Boccigalupe and the Bad Boys, Joe D'Urso, the Danny White Band and other acts. Showtime is 6 p.m. There also will be a separate acoustic stage, featuring Mimi Cross, Rob Dye, Charlie McIntosh, Jason Shain, Bobby Strange, Bruce Tunkel and Mike Wurtele.

Jeffreys and Boccigalupe also will perform Sunday, along with Gary U.S. Bonds, Dan Bern, John Eddie, Highway 9, Marah, Jesse Malin and Exit 105. This show begins at 4 p.m.

Guest appearances by Bruce Springsteen are not guaranteed, but he has appeared at all three previous Light of Day shows, and the lineups for both Saturday and Sunday are full of his friends.

The Light of Day benefits were conceived and organized by Bob Benjamin of Highland Park, who manages Grushecky and has Parkinson's disease. Proceeds from this year's shows will go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Monmouth County and the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

Benjamin also spearheaded the recent two-CD Springsteen tribute album, "Light of Day." Many of the artist who are appearing at the Pony contributed tracks and are likely to perform them.
